Creative Writing Poetry
When you think of creative writing, you might first think about stories and fiction books. Nonfiction essays, articles and books fit into the category as well. And don't forget about poetry. Creative writing poetry is one of the most popular ways of self expression by people of all ages. Everyone from children in elementary school to adults can benefit from writing poetry. There are many different types of poems with different structural rules. Picking up some classic poetry books and reading through them can give you a diverse look at the world of poems.
Princeton University defines poetry as writing in a certain metrical format. Of course this is a very bare description as poetry evokes emotion in so many who write and read it. There are numerous kinds of poetry that can be written, a handful of examples include but are not limited to the sonnet, quatrain, haiku, hyperbole and many others. It can be quite confusing, especially when you get into subjects like iambic pentameter or falling meter, for example. If you are serious about poetry some solid study on the different poem types is recommended.
By learning about the many types of poems, you can decide which ones you want to write. You may already be writing poems, if so try and find out if your work already fits into a category or needs revision. When it comes to a career in poetry, there are not many job listings looking for poets. However, you can make some money by submitting to poetry journals and periodicals, or entering legitimate cash award poetry contests. Sometimes, poetry books do well, but this is a rarity reserved for the most renowned poets in the genre.
One way you can bring creative writing poetry into the modern world and make a career out of it is as a greeting card writer. While many greeting cards do not feature poems, many of them do. A skilled poet can create a beautiful sentiment perfect for various occasions. Framed prints sometimes feature poetry along with the artwork. So don't get discouraged if you want to work as a poet, it might be difficult to break into but is not impossible. However the vast majority of poets are amateur and write for self expression and to give themselves an outlet for their feelings. Poetry writing is especially good for teens who need a creative way to express all the emotions they are dealing with.
| Why creative writing? Why Creative Writing? A common question I have been asked as I get busy with college applications. Heres my thinking. Our body is made up mostly of oxygen, carbon, hydrogen, etc., and when we die, our bodies will decompose and become worm-food. I want something, SOMETHING I can leave behind that says who I was [.].. | ||
